Kompetencecenter for Kønsidentitet hos Børn og Unge
UPDATED 12-APR-2026
Kompetencecenter for Kønsidentitet hos Børn og Unge (KKBU) is the institution in charge of trans healthcare for children (younger than 18 years old) for all of Denmark. In the past Sexologisk Klinik (SK) has been the institution to do this, but as of February 20251 this is the responsibility of KKBU.
Since KKBU is a relatively new clinic there is much less knowledge about how KKBU operate. KKBU offers conversations where you are invited to reflect on your gender ("reflekterende samtaler") or in rare cases hormone therapy2. "Reflekterende samtaler" might be analogous to "gender exploratory therapy", a known type of conversion practice3. It's unclear how many patients are offered hormones.
In 2022, when treatment of trans kids was under Sexologisk Klinik, 22 (6%) of patients were offered hormones4, whereas in 2023, 7 patients were offered hormones5. There is no data for 2024 onwards, nor is there data about patients treated by KKBU. It's also unclear whether KKBU is meaningfully different from the SK. KKBU reports expecting 100-200 patients in a year2, which is a notable decrease from the reported 352 that were referred to Sexologisk Klinik in 2022. KKBU have said over the phone that they don't generally prescribe hormones.
Sexologisk Klinik's practices have been called conversion therapy by ex-patients. Providing talk therapy to patients who needed hormones or blockers caused some patients to delay transitioning for years, at a time where hormones would have had the greatest effect. You can read about one person's experience with conversion therapy in the UK or watch Abigail Thorn's documentary and video essay on the topic. Every person the author knows who has been a patient at SK has said it was a negative experience, and many report suffering medical trauma from the experience. There are pathways to getting hormones that carry less risk of medical neglect and medical trauma.
DIY HRT
We can't tell you what you should do with your body and we don't want to either. Everything written on this website exists to equip you with knowledge so you can make an informed decision. We don't advocate for any specific treatments.
We have an article about DIY HRT, although it mostly talks about feminizing HRT and some masculinizing HRT. It might be possible to acquire puberty blockers (GnRH agonists), but they are expensive and harder to reliably source.
Other clinics
There exist private clinics that reliably prescribe hormones and have less waiting time but cost money.
Imago
Imago prescribes hormones to patients living in Denmark down to age 16, without unnecessarily involving legal guardians. If you're 15 or older, your word is sufficient for medical informed consent in Denmark, but Imago claims that EU regulation means they "need parental consent" for patients younger than 16.6 The cost for onboarding is around 1900 kr and then around 150 kr per month.7 8 They have a no show fee of roughly 390 kr. You will also have to pay for the medication itself.
If you're under 16, Imago will require that your legal guardian is present during the video calls and that your legal guardian permits you to recieve the care.9
GenderGP
GenderGP claim to prescribe hormones and blockers to patients living in Denmark without unnecessarily involving legal guardians10, but it is not clear exactly what that means in practice. The costs appear to be around 1700 kr for onboarding and 260 kr per month11, but there are hidden fees and patients report the average cost being above 8600 kr per year.12 Some Danish patients report a cost of around 5000 kr per year.13 You will also have to pay for the medication itself. They provide some more information in their youth hub.
It's not clear what GenderGP requires for patients under 18. GenderGP's own writing seem to imply that GenderGP will not require the involvement of legal guardians for 16 and 17 year olds.14 15 Whether GenderGP are willing to provide care at all for patients under 16 and how much they require legal guardians to be involved is unclear, and asking GenderGP questions costs money16.
Blood tests
Blood tests can either be free through your own doctor (if they are willing to cooperate) or through a private blood test clinic. See the blood tests section for more information. You can get blood tests without a CPR number, but they might require you to be 18.

It's actually not super clear whether this was HRT, puberty blockers or counting both. Here is the wording.

Imago claims to follow "mature minor consent ability", which in Denmark would be "informeret samtykke for børn og unge". You're allowed to make medical decisions on your own in Denmark when you turn 15. If the Danish medical professional believes informing your legal guardians of this care would negatively impact you, the medical professional is not required to inform your legal guardian. ↩
